My opinion on the TD 500 Classic

Let's be direct: the TD 500 Classic is the lowest-rated dartboard in my entire catalogue, and that's no accident. It's a steel tip dartboard sold at a very low price, at the official 457 mm size, but one essential point is too often left unsaid by this kind of entry-level product: it is not sisal. Its playing surface is made of compressed natural fibre based on rice straw, with a share of wood and steel, a material very different from the traditional sisal used on quality dartboards.

This isn't a hidden flaw, it's the product's very nature: the TD 500 Classic is designed as a backup or starter board, sold at a very low price, not as a board meant to last or handle regular play.

My test of the TD 500 Classic on the oche

On the oche, the board does the basic job: you can throw steel tip darts at a regulation-size target. Visual comfort holds up decently (5/10), the scoring zones stay readable. On the other hand, bounce-out resistance is weak (3/10): darts hitting a wire or an already worn area tend to bounce out more than on a quality sisal board. The staple-free spider helps a little, but doesn't offset the nature of the material.

Durability of the TD 500 Classic

This is the board's weak point, scoring only 2/10. The compressed natural fibre used here does not close back up after a dart impact, unlike sisal, which "self-heals" thanks to fibres that naturally tighten back together. As a result, every impact leaves a permanent mark, holes accumulate quickly in the most-targeted zones, and the playing surface degrades within just a few sessions. This is not a board built for repeated use.

Setup and mounting the board

Nothing special to report on installation: this board mounts like any classic steel tip dartboard, on a suitable wall bracket. No specific technical detail has been communicated for this model on this point.

Price and value for money

At a very affordable price, generally around €30, the TD 500 Classic clearly positions itself as one of the most affordable options on the steel tip dartboard market. Its value for money comes down to that single argument: it costs little, but in return offers very low durability and basic finishing (3/10). It's not a bad deal if bought knowingly for occasional use, but it's no bargain if you plan to play regularly.

Verdict: should you buy the TD 500 Classic?

Only if you're looking for a backup board, to try out steel tip darts a handful of times, or for very occasional play on a tight budget. For regular practice, it's better to invest in a real sisal dartboard, even an entry-level sisal board (such as the Winmau Blade 5) will last significantly longer and offer better playing comfort. The TD 500 Classic is the official 457 mm size, but it is not built to last: its price is the only reason to buy it, nothing else.
